10.10.10. Woodwynn Work Party

350.org in Victoria - Plant a Tree at Woodwynn Farms!

Picture
350.org is calling for a Global Work Party on October 10, 2010 (10/10/10), when thousands of people around the world will install solar panels, plant trees, retrofit homes, and demand that their politicians get to work themselves. The day will empower communities, and give a sense of momentum to the idea that we really can address climate change!

The Global Work Party is happening locally at Woodwynn Farms!  We are looking for volunteers and donors to help us raise funds for 350 fruit and nut trees to also be planted at Woodwynn on 10/10/10.  And, we’re looking for volunteers to come out to the Farm on 10/10/10 to plant a few trees!

Just like “barn-raising” gatherings in the days of old, this is going to be an exciting, empowering, and FUN experience for all involved.  This initiative will bring our local community together for a common cause – to help a wonderful cause like Woodwynn in their initial start-up stages.

Woodwynn Farms

Picture
Woodwynn is a 193-acre organic farm and therapeutic community for the homeless, offering an opportunity to change peoples’ lives with educational and work programmes based on responsibility, dignity, independence, and the principles of peer-to-peer help.

Woodwynn is the ideal location for a Therapeutic Community. It is accessible to education and medical facilities. It is reachable by public transport. The farm is well suited (soil capability, land layout and area, and outbuildings) for intensive and mixed sustainable and profitable agriculture. A farm such as this one not only becomes a model for other communities, it becomes a valued community asset and an excellent example of community activism.

350.org is an international movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis. The mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis—to create a new sense of urgency - and possibility - for our planet.  The focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere.  If we can't get below that, scientists say, the damage we're already seeing from global warming will continue and accelerate.  (Right now, we're at 388.15 parts per million). 350 is more than a number--it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet. It's our goal.

Their theory of change is simple: if an international grassroots movement holds our leaders accountable to the latest climate science, we can start the global transformation we so desperately need.
